Dauphin Island
|
Dauphin Island, a 14 mile-long barrier island off
the Alabama Gulf Coast, is arguably one of the top four locations in North America for
viewing spring migrations! On the eastern end of the island, you will find the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Alabama’s marine
science institution, and the
Audubon Bird Sanctuary, which consists of 164 acres of maritime forest, marshes, and dunes, including a lake, swamp and beach. Although first colonized in the 1600s, it was not until 1954 that a 3 1/2mile bridge was built connecting Dauphin Island to the mainland.
